I had a whole different experience from bariatric diet surgery because mine was not intentional. I was having a great deal of pain in my side as well as unexplained “coffee ground” feces (it was dreadfully black and very granular). I was concerned and went into the doctor because of those symptoms. After some tests, which included an ultra-sound, a stool culture (yuck) and a sigmoidoscopy (bigger yuck), I was admitted to the hospital for exploratory surgery. The doctors discovered a large grapefruit-sized tumor attached to the gall bladder and extending over to the stomach and small bowel. It was non-malignant but had to be removed. I had had tumors before: thyroid tumor, breast tumors, and one on the ovaries.

The doctors went in to remove the tumor and, with it, my gallbladder, part of my stomach, and five feet of small bowel. As a result of this surgery, I started losing a surprising amount of weight. I was delighted to be dieting without trying. I could no longer eat red meat or fatty foods because of the surgery. The only lingering

effect I had was some seepage from my belly button and soreness around the incision for about two weeks.

I also felt full quicker and didn’t feel like eating as much because I only had half my stomach. I went from 225 pounds to 150 pounds over the next two years without trying. I’m still active, but now I see the real me when I look in the mirror.

Some minor complaints I had before like sore hips and a stiff knee went away completely. I had also experienced some incontinence prior to my surgery. The doctors said the muscles were weak from having six children, but it went away after I lost 75 pounds.
